Following on from a successful Building Life Sciences Adventures careers conference, our April 2021 My Question Is…Networking Lunch was dedicated to continuing discussions that arose from the conference.  I am delighted to have the opportunity to blog about the outputs from this session and to keep the conversation going.  As usual, we asked our network to pose the questions that were important to them.  So, without further ado, let’s kick off with the questions… Question one submitted by Claire Russell, Royal Veterinary College: “What would encourage companies to take on…

They covered all corners ranging from being a coach, a team…
Panel Ricky Martin, HRS (Chair) Nadia Shivji-Brown, Public Health England (PHE) Andrew Carr, Charles River Laboratories (CRL) Renos Savva, Birkbeck, University of London   Ricky opened the discussion by asking the panel “what does investing in personal R&D mean to you?”. Andrew Carr (Andy) began by sharing one of his personal experiences about how he has had to retrain twice during his career to get to where he is today at CRL, once scientifically and the second time as a manager to learn how to be responsible and support the people who work for him. A valuable piece of advice was…
In recent years Contract Research Organisations (CROs) have become the backbone of pharma and biotech research and development (R&D), the go-to source for in-depth know-how and niche expertise no longer available within such organisations. Despite being squeezed hard by COVID-19, according to new analysis out by Frost and Sullivan, the global market should still grow to $63.83 billion by 2024 from $43.03 billion in 2019, at a compound annual growth rate of 8.2%. The growth of the global CRO market has been primarily driven by increased big pharma outsourced development spend and the…
Recognise this? It’s a common sight in many research facilities across the world: container after container filled with important biological samples. It may mean it’s time to upgrade from containers to a better, long-term solution. Often, research projects or sample storage facilities will start small, using just one or two containers - often referred to as ‘dewars’ - to store a few samples. As the facility grows, more and more containers are added until you have a makeshift cryo-room which probably looks something like the above image. Samples are generally never thrown away by researchers…
During our careers, the opportunity to work on something genuinely ground-breaking, something pioneering that raises the bar, is extremely rare. In October, the Kao Data team was contacted by NVIDIA regarding their Cambridge-1 project. As soon as we saw the plans for the UK’s most powerful supercomputer, we were hooked. Collaborating with NVIDIA comes with an expectation that you’ll be operating alongside some of the smartest minds in the industry; that innovation is everything and that you’ll be performing at pace. Supercharged pace. NVIDIA’s Cambridge-1 project has exceeded those…
Once again, One Nucleus held a really useful and informative session whereby an intimate group of attendees gathered to discuss thought-provoking questions posed by the One Nucleus community.  Discussions each take place in individual breakout groups, but so the key take-aways can be disseminated more widely, this wrap-up serves to provide an overview of all discussions.  Therefore, regardless of the breakout group individuals were in, the insights are shared amongst all. Question one submitted by Fay Weston, Independent: “How important is ESG/CSR reporting going to become in the UK…
Our My Question is….Networking Lunches are gaining momentum now and one might say an adept way of keeping in touch as we come to the end of a cold, locked down January.  Once again, our network was primed with a variety of questions across different topics that they were keen to debate.  Over 30 delegates joined our virtual networking session looking to meet and catch up with others informally and for perhaps a learning experience too.  Five breakout rooms and five questions later, here is what came out of the discussions: Question one submitted by Kathryn Simpson; Kathryn…
How will the loss of in-person laboratory teaching impact job prospects? As a follow up to our recent poll asking if the current undergraduates who are losing in-person laboratory teaching will be disadvantaged in securing future jobs. The results can be summarised as:             No surprise perhaps that the overwhelming majority (84% where n=230) felt the answer was yes and in ‘normal’ situations the consequence should be avoided. We are not in normal times, of course, so how to balance the need to contain the spread of a virus with in-person teaching needs is…
