Scientific Training Officer

17 May 2018

Job Description
The main focus is on developing training courses and knowledge-exchange workshops to support developers and users of biomedical data services. Responsibilities include:
  • Supporting the Training Coordinator to develop and deliver training courses, both at EMBL-EBI and at other locations worldwide. Development involves liaison with hosts and trainers to ensure that course programmes meet the needs of their target audiences. Delivery involves being present throughout the duration of these courses, which involves some work outside of normal office hours. Some of this work may be done in association with externally funded projects.
  • Contributing to the collection and analysis of training statistics with other colleagues.
  • Monitoring and responding to feedback from courses for the purposes of quality control.
  • Developing training materials for face-to-face and online delivery.
  • Training on courses where appropriate, both at EMBL-EBI and at other locations worldwide.
  • Assisting others to develop their training skills, both within and beyond EMBL-EBI.
  • Working with events organisers to deliver training events and ensure that course information (including web pages) is kept up to date.
The post reports to the Training Coordinator. It involves substantial autonomy and requires extensive interactions with others at and beyond EMBL-EBI. The role involves international travel.
At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 24 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.
Qualifications and Experience

You should possess a PhD, and ideally some postdoctoral experience, in the molecular life sciences or a related subject. A teaching or training qualification would be an added bonus but is not essential.

We are looking for a confident user of bioinformatics services rather than a bioinformatician. Familiarity with using large biomedical data sets to answer research questions would be a bonus but is not essential. Experience in training other researchers, and/or the development of training materials or documentation, is highly desirable.

In addition to being highly self-motivated, you must have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to work well as part of a team. Your ability to work to deadlines is essential. Candidates with a desire to work in an international environment are encouraged to apply, and experience of working with multiple partners from different countries across Europe would be a distinct advantage.

Good working knowledge of multiple operating systems would be advantageous; experience of programming is not necessary although could be an asset.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation.

We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise – something you probably won’t find anywhere else.

If you’ve ever visited the campus you’ll have experienced first-hand our friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere, set in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside. Our staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities including a gym, a free shuttle bus, an on-site nursery, cafés and restaurant and a library.
