Scientific Data Analyst

The DNA Pipelines department (DNAP) has a central role within Wellcome Sanger Institute, delivering high quality data to our scientific faculty and their collaborators over a range of techniques and platforms. The Data Analyst team are committed to driving research projects forward by ensuring that we continually improve standards, provide additional quality control support and maintain prompt delivery data timelines.

We are seeking a highly motivated data analyst with an adaptable and responsive approach that is seeking to contribute to a successful, adaptable and friendly team. In your role you will monitor multiple data outputs including, spread sheets, data warehouses and actual sequencing machines.

  • You will be office based and have the opportunity to develop and expand your information gathering and analytical skills.
  • You will establish yourself within the role and gain a solid technical grasp of the latest world-class sequencing technologies.
  • Your data interpretation and trend spotting abilities will be used to help advance scientific understanding of some of the world's major causes of death and disability, including developmental disorders, cancer and malaria.

Full training will be given to enable you to complete regular QC of data sets, in line with SOP’s from both the DNA and RNA product pipelines. You will determine if the data meets agreed thresholds, is free from defects and has no underlying bias such that stakeholder expectations are met or exceeded. You’ll be given all necessary support to know when to raise examples of non-conformity to the Senior Data Analyst for further investigation.

Essential Skills:

  • BSc in a biological science/computer science or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to correctly interpret scientific data.
  • Computer literate: Word, advanced excel, LIMS.
  • Theoretical knowledge of data management that is relevant to the role.
  • Proven track record of consistent delivery in terms of volume/speed/quality.
  • Experience with high-throughput assays or a high throughput environment.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.

Ideal Skills:

  • Experience of Next Generation Sequencing; experience of genotyping data.
  • Working knowledge of Tableau.
  • Previous work experience in a molecular biology laboratory.
  • Familiarity with a quality procedures and maintaining good documentation.
