Senior Scientific Manager - Cellular Generation and Phenotyping

A rare opportunity has arisen for a talented scientific manager to lead a group within the Cellular Generation and Phenotyping team (CGaP) here at the Sanger Institute. Your remit would be to deliver multiple diverse cell biology projects through your leadership of others.

We are a core facility, responsible for providing cell biology resource and expertise to the wider institute. We do this by running multiple, diverse, large scale projects for various faculty teams.  Our current portfolio of projects includes genome wide CRISPR screens, iPSC derivation and differentiation, organoid derivation, The Human Cell Atlas Initiative and the generation of Plasmodiummutants.

You will be responsible for managing and delivering large-scale cell biology projects via the successful leadership of 4-6 research assistants of varying grades. You will be in charge of delivering between 2 and 3 projects at any one time, the current projects ear marked for you are a CRISPR iPSC whole genome library screen and a high throughput neuronal differentiation project.

To succeed in this role you will need experience of scientific project management, excellent people skills and an understanding of the challenges of running multiple diverse projects at scale. Excellent organisational and planning skills are fundamental in running multiple projects simultaneously, with a need to ensure the team and all associated collaborators are fully informed of project status.

Essential Skills:
  • Extensive work experience in the field of cell biology, obtained via work in either Industry, biotech, CRO or R&D facility.
  • Significant experience and understanding of human cell biology techniques,
  • Experience of managing others to deliver in an operational, scientific management role,
  • Experience in line management, with a proven ability to motivate, develop and coach your staff,
  • Track record of delivering projects to agreed schedules, budgets and quality standards,
  • Understanding of and ability to determine, establish, monitor, report and act on critical metrics,
  • Proven organisational skills with the ability to plan and schedule yourself and your teams resource,
  • Highly developed communication skills with experience of establishing and maintaining effective relationships with people at all levels,
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team,
  • Experience in troubleshooting both process and biological based issues.

Ideal Skills:

  • Prior experience of working in a containment level 2 and/or 3 biological lab,
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements for Human and animal samples/tissue.
