We have a unique opportunity for a Head of Research. to join our world leading Scientific Operations team. Working closely with our senior scientists across the organisation, the Head of Research will provide strategic-level input, expert scientific counsel and will deliver innovative applied research programmes that support our cutting-edge science.
About the role:
As Head of Research you will have primary responsibility for leading and directing horizon scanning activities to identify opportunities emerging within the organisation and externally. You will be the pinnacle of research thought leadership within Scientific Operations, developing close working relationships with faculty groups and ICT colleagues to stimulate innovation and work collaboratively on new initiatives. You will be expected to foster, grow and harmonise the applied research culture across the organisation and will lead a dedicated team of technical and scientific experts with a remit to identify and qualify potential solutions that fulfil unmet scientific needs.
You will understand the challenges being faced and will lead the development of solutions that address them, using evidence-led approaches and work in accordance with the organisational policies on Behavioural Competency and Good Research Practice.
You will manage 3-4 specialist groups, with each group leader having a strong background in a particular domain of expertise that aligns with our operational functions.
As Head of Research you will be expected to promote and role-model a culture of diversity, inclusivity, creativity and positivity, driving forward change where necessary.

Our science is large-scale and organised into research Programmes, led by our Faculty who conceive and deliver our science, and supported by our Scientific Operations and IT teams responsible for all data production pipelines, compute and storage facilities at the Institute.
PhD in molecular biology or similar subject
Extensive and demonstrable experience of working in an applied research environment
Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams, working with and across teams
Exemplary leadership skills with both practical and short/long term strategic vision; ability to build relationships and inspire confidence and respect at all levels; strong team player.
Experience leading research projects/programmes/consortia
Detailed and extensive working knowledge of applied research methods (e.g. statistical analysis, experimental design, good research practice).

A good blend of strategic and analytical thinking; innovative personality; able to see the bigger picture and set future direction.
