RSSL: Senior Scientist, Biomolecular Analysis

Purpose of the Role

In RSSL we are customer focused, science led and results driven. The RSSL BioMolecular Analysis laboratory performs a wide range of analytical analyses for a variety of pharmaceutical and healthcare companies.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Scientist to provide technical direction in the BioMolecular Analysis laboratory. The successful candidate will focus on routine and investigative analyses of products, method development and validations using techniques such as ELISA, HPLC, Mass spectrometry, PCR and enzyme assays.

As Senior Scientist – Biomolecular Analysis you will use your technical expertise to develop and train junior members – improving capability across the laboratory.

As a successful CRO you will engage with our clients, working in collaboration to create optimal outcomes.

Main Responsibilities


- Provide high quality customer service at all times by ensuring effective organisation of assigned workload, integrity of analytical data generated and timely/accurate provision of results.
- Provide Technical direction within own area of expertise within the team.
- Perform a range of analysis using ELISA, HPLC, Mass spectrometry, PCR, Tissue culture and enzyme assays independently.
- Perform complex method development and design validation protocols.
- Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment.
- Provide Technical direction within own area of expertise within the team.
- Perform data checking and provide interpretation of results for routine testing.
- Generate certificate analysis or external interpretive reports.
- Expert user os specific software and proficient in the use of generic and specific software packages require for the role: Laboratory’s LIMS system, Q-Pulse, CRM, GEN 5, Open Lab
- Provide training and supervise junior staff in routine activities and methods and interpretation.

Communication & Influence

- Work as part of an efficient analytical team.
- To liaise with clients, business development and line management to ensure effective communication of project proposals and results.
- Participate in client and stake holders meetings as required.
- Deliver internal presentations across groups and to technical stakeholders.
- Manage small projects or defined areas of larger projects.

Leadership and supervision

- Plan own workload and plan routine projects for junior staff.
- Train junior members of the team as required.
- Manage a team of Scientists and Technicians.


- Work to the highest standards of safety and quality by ensuring that appropriate COSHHs, risk assessments and SOPs are understood and followed.
- To complete assigned quality actions on a timely manner, including review and approval.
- Write and approve SOPs and Test Methods.
- Generation and approval of Risk Assesments and COSHH.
- Understand and provide technical regulatory leadership in client audits.
- To maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment.
- To understand and work to the requirements of GMP and UKAS.
- Ensure training records are accurate.


Candidate Requirements

- The successful candidate will ideally be educated to enhanced Degree or PhD level in Biochemistry or equivalent with extensive experience in a commercial laboratory.
- Educated to Degree or PhD in a relevant scientific discipline with extensive real world experience or equivalent relevant experience in a laboratory.
- Excellent understanding of basic/UV/Visible and Fluorescence plate readers, HPLC and densitometers.
- Scientific understanding and ability to independently conduct Biologic analysis in relevant area.
- Good knowledge of laboratory quality and accreditation systems (GMP) (Preferred).
- Extensive experience in an analytical laboratory, CRO, or regulated laboratory.

- Ability to problem solve and plan resources to maintain workflow in delivery of projects.


- Extensive real world experience post PhD or extensive proven experience working in developing or performing analysis on proteins, peptides or Nucleic acids.
- Knowledge of ICH guidelines and the ability to apply to assay validation design and performance.
- Experience of working for. Or with, a CRO (Preferred).
- Familiarity with BioAssays (Preferred).
- Analytical Project management.


- English Fluency (Written and Spoken).
