A bit about the role:

To be responsible for LifeArc’s compliance to the Health and Safety Executive and promote a positive H&S and compliance culture throughout LifeArc’s sites

To perform the task of the Biological Safety Officer (BSO) for the Stevenage and The Crick sites, being responsible for compliance to Human Tissue Authority, The Home Office and other governing bodies. To be responsible for Ethics throughout LifeArc’s science activities

Principal responsibilities include:

Delegated responsibility for all sites’ H&S and scientific compliance.
Develop and implement all H&S procedures and documentation within remit and ensure they are current and compliant.
Provide H&S induction, training and advise on best practice.
Management of fire safety measures.
Perform safety inspections, investigate breaches or accidents.
Where applicable, identify and liaise with scientists requiring health surveillance due to human tissue work and other potential hazards.
Maintain diary for licence renewal, compliance returns and act when appropriate
Provides technical and strategic Health and Safety guidance to the whole of LifeArc.
Proactively influence a positive Health and Safety culture across LifeArc and advise on the achievement of best practice in health and safety and compliance.
Act as in-house expert in these areas of work, providing advice as necessary to all scientists
Follow risk and governance controls as well as highlighting areas for improvement within department
Keep up to date with legislation and best practice in this area of work.
To be responsible for Ethics throughout LifeArc’s scientific activities

About you:

Education & experience required:

NEBOSH Diploma, Grad/Tech IOSH (or equivalent) required
Recent Biological Safety officer qualification required
Educated to A Level (or equivalent) with a further qualification in science desired
Experience in a laboratory H&S and Compliance required
Experience participating in a Health & Safety and Ethics Committees desired

Skills & abilities:

A demonstrated and sound knowledge of legislation covering health and safety and compliance requirements in this area of work
BSO/GMO, Ethics committees and Human tissue experience required
Experience with Animal Licences required
Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
Confident verbal and written communicator.
Ability to carry out audits and inspections required
Works well with others
