Introduction to Drug Discovery – From Idea to Clinical Candidate

Audience

Typical attendees include science-based professionals: biologists, molecular biologists, chemists, preclinical development scientists, informaticians, patent attorneys, project managers, general managers and technology transfer managers.

Duration

A one day course.

Objectives

The course is a ‘one-stop-shop’ outlining the major scientific tools of drug discovery, namely: Drug Discovery Biology, ADMET/PK/PD, Medicinal Chemistry, Informatics/Virtual technologies. It shows how these contributions are phased over time and integrated to generate a drug suitable for transfer to the Preclinical-Clinical Development Group.

The focus is on small molecule drugs with comparisons made with biologics. Based on real-world experience and practical realities, attendees travel step-by-step along a typical drug discovery path, namely: Initiating Idea -> Drug Target Protein Selection -> Lead Identification -> Clinical Candidate Nomination.

Essential related topics include drug discovery technology platforms, drug structural-functional quality attributes and Project management tools. Key existing and emerging technologies, infrastructure and essential skills requirements are also covered in the course.
