The keynote panel, taking place at Genesis on 10 December at 1 Wimpole Street, London will explore the above question; What do you think should feature in the conversation? As the final preparations take shape, themes include:
- Perceived progress in unlocking domestic institutional capital (such as pension funds and insurance pools) to support later-stage (Series B and beyond) rounds, thus reducing the reliance on overseas venture capital that often forces early cross-border buyouts.
- The potential for creative commercial structures such as co-development partnerships, regional licensing deals, and asset-swaps that provide non-dilutive or growth-stage funding.
- Can the domestic lab infrastructure, incubators, and science parks (e.g., Catapult networks, Cambridge/Oxford ecosystems) be leveraged more to scale operations cost-effectively.
- Do, and if not how can UK biotechs compete with US hubs (like Boston or San Francisco) for top-tier executive talent (such as seasoned CMOs and CFOs).
- Developing pathways to train and retain cross-functional talent spanning clinical trial design, data science, and regulatory affairs.
- Maximising Unique UK Competitive Advantages, capitalising on world-class academic research institutions and unique health data assets (such as the UK Biobank and NHS datasets).
- The Role of Government Policy and Regulation - Evaluating what fiscal incentives, tax credits (like R&D tax relief schemes), and pro-innovation regulatory frameworks the UK government must enact to make staying independent economically viable for founders and early investors.
