The whole driver for One Nucleus activities, from Conferences and Events to Training Courses, Purchasing Schemes and Newsletters, could be summarised under a heading of Innovation Support.
The goal of helping each and every One Nucleus Member succeed focusses the activities at enabling members to connect to investors and partners, identify new clients, build and retrain first rate teams and share the knowledge that is pushing innovation towards better patient outcomes forward. Each business success among our members goes towards hat collective goal, providing investor returns, employment, publications and solutions to unmet needs on an on-going basis. The flip side of that of course is that when a business or programme fails, other than for negative scientific results, then that is one patient benefit that may never make it to the bedside.
Recent examples of sharing knowledge among peers, connecting our members to partners, supporting member business development and helping members nurture their teams include the following:
The September BioWednesday panel discussion focussed on "What is shaping the 2030 Life Science future and what is the role of real estate in supporting ecosystems over the coming years?" The discussion reiterated what we have heard before in terms of the high value placed on existing ecosystems and the immense cluster effect in innovation.
The challenge of developing suitable laboratory space in the most desired locations are high at present. Laboratory vacancy rates in Cambridge for example having been virtually zero now for some time. A dynamic not helpful to landlords or occupiers in reality. The benefits of the close proximity of start-ups and more mature life science companies, as well as investors, academic research institutes and the required service providers are manifold in such a deep and complex technology field such as life sciences. A reason perhaps such rental premiums are placed on premier locations such as Cambridge (UK and US versions), London, Oxford, San Diego and San Francisco as well as the strong European and Asian hubs.
This theme was further illustrated during last week’s One Nucleus Member delegation to Boston. Primarily supported by United Airlines, Bidwells and Goodwin with the assistance of collaborators both in the UK and Massachusetts, the travelling group heard about the Greater Boston dynamic. Among key elements discussed were:
- The clustering impact of nurturing innovation and business growth
- The cost vs benefit of locating in prime locations
- The investment landscape and trends with the IPO window feeling barely open
- Real estate leasing trends and values
- The importance of the ‘super-connector’

Recruiting, retaining and developing the best team has always been vital to successful businesses. In an era of extremely rapid growth, convergence of disciplines and a perceived shortage of talent, this aspect has never been more at the forefront. Supporting our members in this aspect, One Nucleus delivers a suite of people-factor orientated sessions to complement the jobs board, LinkedIn Member Jobs Group and connectivity through networking. In-person and online delivery of Training Courses such as ‘Introduction to Drug Discovery’; ‘Introduction to Drug Development’, ‘Presentation Skills for Scientists’ and more enable employees to be developed and motivated. The Employer of Choice series, delivered with the Future of Work Institute cover topics discussing how to make any workplace or engagement optimal with today’s talent aspirations. The most recent session was entitled ‘Storytelling and the New Employee Experience’ (request access to the recording). Other sessions have included ‘Biotech Talent Trends’ and ‘Creating a Diverse and Inclusive Workforce’
