Bioinformatician (Genomics Product Development)

Your chance to get involved in an exciting early-stage biotechnology venture and make a real impact!

About Us:

One of the greatest challenges facing human healthcare is the observation that therapeutics and interventions vary in effectiveness between individuals. Only the advent of DNA sequencing has allowed researchers to understand the underlying cause for this and to pave the way for personalised medicines that couple knowledge of your genetics to your health.

At Cambridge Epigenetix (CEGX), we are creating a future where sequencing generates more information from DNA and is achievable at far lower costs, bringing closer the day when advanced medicines, diagnostics and personalized treatments become a reality for all. We are creating a technology platform that will deliver a step change in the type of information that can be generated from DNA and the cost at which it can be generated. We expect our technology to become a fundamental component of healthcare and life sciences research.

The Team:

The Software and Informatics team are a multidisciplinary group consisting of data engineering, software development, DevOps, and machine learning experts whose work supports internal research and development as well as forming the core components of or commercial products. Ultimately the team builds software that sorts, analyses and displays DNA sequencing and methylation data, which encompasses a wide range of technologies:

Cloud-based storage
Advanced database systems and data structures
Automated analysis and machine learning
Complex display and UI
Data annotation and interfacing with external scientific data sources
The Role:

This is an exciting opportunity for an early or mid-career Bioinformatician to join an organisation poised for success in 2022. We are looking for talented bioinformaticians to drive the development of novel methods to analyse and interpret Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data, using our proprietary technology, to ultimately empower our product development scientists and early adopting customers get the most from their sequencing data.

You will work within an interdisciplinary team, developing methods to process, analyse and interpret DNA sequence and methylation data. You will provide analyses to support our internal R&D as well as contributing to the development of the software components of our commercial products. You will work closely with the engineers on the team, contributing production-quality code and providing guidance to software developers.

You can expect to collaborate with the wider R&D team at Cambridge Epigenetix to develop product requirements and to plan and analyse experiments.

Key Responsibilities:

Design, execution and analysis of experiments to interpret and evaluate the outputs of our data processing pipelines.
Develop new methodologies for the analysis of data generated by our proprietary technology and assessment of new third-party methods.

The Person:

We appreciate the Bioinformaticians come from varied academic backgrounds but all share their passion of developing powerful tools to drive the understanding of genomic data, and hence are open to the nature of your education subject. The ideal candidate will have:

Essential Skills:

Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) or commensurate experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistical genetics, or a related field
Experience of at least one of the programming languages commonly used in data science and scientific programming (such as Python, R, or Julia).
Experience analysing high throughput genomic datasets such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, or WGBS.
Experience with genomic-specific computational workflow platforms (such as DNANexus or NextFlow).
Competent using Unix–based operating systems, associated technologies and data management tools.
Strong team player with experience working in a collaborative environment (academic or industry).
Enjoy working as part of a fast-moving and results-oriented business where delivery against deadlines is critical.
Ability to communicate complex topics appropriately to an array of different backgrounds and audiences.
Nice to haves:

Expertise in software development best practices (version control, code review, pair programming, agile/scrum, testing, etc.).
Experience using and deploying systems on cloud platforms (such as GCP or AWS).
Good knowledge of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, database systems).
Experience developing software to support AI/ML or Data Visualisation applications.
Understanding of Epigenomics, Cancer Biology, Cancer Epigenomics/Genomics Field, Immunology.
We are looking for a number of individuals to join the team over the next 3-6 months and are happy to speak to early career candidates with less than 1-2 years’ experience as well as senior or veteran informaticians who want to join a company where they have more ownership and autonomy in their work.

As a small start-up organisation, with aggressive growth targets for 2022, CEGX will be able to offer great career opportunities for innovative individuals willing to take ownership.

Our Values:

Diversity of person = Diversity of thought = Innovation!

At CEGX we recognise that no one can foresee the problems a new, fast growth and technology-driven organisation will encounter. Only by populating our teams with a diverse range of individuals, who feel comfortable bringing their authentic selves to the workplace, can we ensure we have the human capital to deliver the innovation needed.

At CEGX we believe in rewarding dedication, innovation and ownership. Our benefits package reflects the broad demographic and diversity of employee we wish to engage and retain:

Core Benefits
