The Commercial Partnerships team (CP) is dedicated to the development and commercialisation of innovative research. The team accelerates the translation of new ideas into treatments by bringing together the expertise, capabilities, and resources of CRUK and its academic network with that of industry partners.

As part of the CP team, the New Ventures group play a critical part in the formation of new start-up companies and industry alliances by supporting the CRUK academic community to build strong commercial propositions around scientific concepts and working with them to establish the appropriate vehicle and build the associated team.

CRUK invests significant resource to support the academic community translate their research, including through a dedicated seed fund for investment in early-stage spinout and alliance propositions. To date, 33 companies have been spun out of Cancer Research UK-funded research, raising over £0.75 billion in capital to progress new products to tackle cancer.

As a Business Development Executive (BDE) specialising in spin-out development, a significant proportion of your time will be committed to the development of an emerging pipeline of new spin-out opportunities to the point that they are validated, investment ready, and established. The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of developing new companies in science-based sectors. You will have gained such experience from serial entrepreneurship, early stage investment, or have a university/corporate technology transfer background.

We are seeking a well organised and entrepreneurial individual, with proven experience and ability to develop new spinout companies. You will be able to demonstrate a track record of competence in the development of realistic and compelling business plans, and success in raising seed stage investment and/or grant funding. You will be conscientious, detail- and goal- oriented, resilient and tenacious with the ability to prioritise workload and to run a number of projects simultaneously.

The post-holder will additionally be expected to carry out broad business development and commercialisation activities in accordance with CP needs, working closely with academics, technology transfer offices, biotech and pharma partners to proactively promote CP/CRUK and its technologies to the pharma/biotech industry and investors, manage complex negotiations and make considered contributions to CP’s business strategy and operations.
