Central Services Technician

Job Summary

This is an important role within the Operations team at Horizon Discovery, playing a key part in managing our portfolio of scientific equipment. Working to ISO9001 and ISO13485, this position will ensure that we maintain our equipment to necessary standards. The successful candidate will play an important part in the continued development of the Operations team in Cambridge.

The focus of the role will be on ensuring the necessary maintenance of scientific equipment on site, but also enhancing the service delivery to our scientific teams. In addition, there will be a requirement to support current projects to enhance and expand the delivery of services to our scientific teams. With a long-term strategy of developing the central lab support function on site, the successful recruitment of this role is important in continuing our focus on delivering 'Time for Science' within the business. The position will also be focused upon delivering operational efficiencies, improving equipment up-time, assessing equipment life-cycle management and supporting the implementation of new systems to support overall equipment management.

Key Responsibilities

Provide efficient and effective daily management of laboratory equipment, materials and reagent stocks.
Management of service contracts with equipment vendors.
Using current computer and web-based systems, coordinate the purchase, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment.
Maintain detailed and accurate maintenance logs and records per company and relevant ISO standards.
Manage and maintain centralised lab processes and reagents, including media and buffers as needed.
Provide monthly reporting of metrics and KPI’s to manager with participation in Quarterly Management Reviews.
Manage and maintain the Kanban cards for central services and all stocked items.
Place purchase orders for consumables for lab and services, working through Purchasing for best price and service.
Respond and resolve equipment and/or process breakdowns quickly and efficiently.
Contribute to risk assessments for the labs and ensure adherence of Health & Safety policies.
Participate in all regulatory, quality, insurance and Health & Safety audits.
Maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Training Records; updating and ensuring they are current and accurate at all times.
Pro-actively identify, recommend, collaborate and support implementation of continuous improvement projects for profitability, quality and efficient ways of working.
Support 5S on site and contribute to operational excellence projects where applicable
Monitor budget and support improvements to delivery for increased efficiencies and cost savings.
Where possible support routine maintenance work, fault analysis and respond to equipment faults from Laboratory users.
Co-ordinate responses to scientific equipment breakdowns.
Carry out quality inspections on jobs carried out by external vendors.
Liaise with Scientific departments, Lab Managers, Operations and production colleagues
Arrange specialist procurement of fixtures, fittings or components where required.
Ensure there is continuous cover of the scientific equipment in case of breakdowns.
Key Qualifications

Significant experience working in a laboratory setting and of managing scientific equipment
Degree or appropriate lab certifications preferred
Experience using systems to manage inventory and equipment records.
Strong written, verbal and communication skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory practices with relevant training and qualifications. Ability to resolve complex issues with clear communications to external and internal persons.
An ability to work independently and collaboratively within the Team/Company
Detail-orientated to ensure tasks are carried out with high degree of accuracy and precision by self and others.
Customer-focused philosophy and approach.
Experience of working within a regulated environment particularly within ISO9001 and ISO13485
You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, team environment and on multiple projects. You will be well organised, uphold high standards, demonstrate a good work ethic and have excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
