EMBL-EBI: Scientific Data Curator (EBI01622)

We are looking to recruit a Scientific Database Curator to join the Cellular Structure & 3D Bioimaging team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

EMBL-EBI is a world-leader in archiving and disseminating 3D biomacromolecular and cellular structure data. The Cellular Structure & 3D Bioimaging team plays a key role in the dissemination of 3DEM data through the EMDB (emdb-empiar.org) and EMPIAR (empiar.org) public archives. We develop and provide advanced tools and web-resources for searching, analyzing and visualizing structural data for the benefit of structural biologists and the wider scientific community. The team consists of an international and inter-disciplinary mix of professionals (scientists and IT specialists).

The post holder will augment the cryo electron microscopy (cryo-EM) domain expertise in the CS3DB team and work on a project involving the annotation and biocuration of the EMDB/PDB and EMPIAR archives. The biocuration activity with also involve improving the integration of EMDB and EMPIAR data with other bioinformatics resources. This project also involves making resources more accessible to a broader spectrum of biomedical users. The post holder will therefore help with user-experience (UX) testing, outreach and training.

Applicants should have a Masters/PhD degree in a structural biology related field (e.g., X-ray crystallography, NMR and 3DEM) and at least one year’s experience in cryo-EM.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, fluency in English, ability to work in a team, and attention to detail are required. The position will require occasional travel.

Previous experience of structural deposition, bio-curation, UX testing, outreach and training would be beneficial, as would the demonstrated ability to take initiative, learn quickly and adapt to new challenges.
