Head of Clinical Pharmacology & Pharmacometrics – Cambridge, UK

Mission Therapeutics is an early-stage drug development company targeting the ubiquitin pathway for the treatment of kidney disease, neurodegenerative disease, rare mitochondrial diseases and fibrosis. The Company has built a leading platform for the discovery and development of first-in-class, small molecule drugs that selectively target deubiquitylating enzymes (DUBs) – an emerging drug class that is attracting significant commercial interest in the area of protein homeostasis.

We are looking for a driven, enthusiastic, organised and proactive individual to join our team in Cambridge, UK where we are ideally situated in a fantastic new facility on the Babraham Research Campus at the heart of Europe’s largest biotechnology cluster.

The Head of Clinical Pharmacology & Pharmacometrics is a key role contributing to the development of Mission’s exciting portfolio of DUB inhibitors and is responsible for directing, overseeing and managing DMPK activities for Mission compounds as they move toward and through early clinical studies.

Overall, they will be a key expert to enable the selection of small molecule drug development candidates and provide detailed assessment of their pharmacokinetic characteristics. Using state of the art modelling and simulation techniques, they will work with other team members and apply their expert knowledge of translational models, PBPK, system pharmacology models, disease models, population PK/PD models and clinical trial simulations, to understand the Clinical Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of novel drug candidates.

Key responsibilities of the role will include:

• Working closely with colleagues they will provide strategic and hands-on leadership relating to DMPK (including PK and in vitro ADME), to address absorption, metabolism and pharmacokinetic issues for lead/candidate molecules for both peripheral and CNS candidates, ensuring selection and utilization of appropriate in vitro, in vivo, or in silico methods and models.
• Accountable for the design, execution, supervision, and interpretation of clinical pharmacology programs in support of drugs in development.
• Oversee bespoke PK and PK/PD analysis during late-stage lead optimisation through preclinical development, and collaboration with pharmacology and translational teams in PK/PD and efficacy study design to support first clinical dose estimates.
• Oversight and interpretation of bioanalysis and toxicokinetic aspects of GLP studies.
• Advising research teams as necessary on non-clinical and clinical pharmacology, PK and PK/PD study design.
• Providing expert input into regulatory documents.
• Anticipating development needs based on in-depth understanding of the relevant drug development issues. Identifying opportunities, advocating and driving the integration and implementation of modern aspects of drug development with particular emphasis on M&S and decision analysis methodologies. across the major drug development milestones.
• Taking leadership and accountability in driving best practise in Clin Pharm, PK. PD, DMPK, M&S.
• Contributing to the review of NCE development strategies, clinical development plans, and study protocols.
• Providing leadership to enable project teams to make maximally informed decisions regarding selection and stage up of discovery compounds for preclinical development.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• Expertise in DMPK, Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics, particularly in support of the transition between preclinical and clinical development.
• PhD in relevant discipline highly desirable.
• 10 years drug development experience with exposure to multiple development programs.
• Demonstrated ability or potential to thrive in fast-moving biotech environment.
• Strong communicator and excellent team player.
