Your role in our team:

We are looking for a Research Assistant to join the Vector Workshop and Automation group, within the Functional Genomics team on a 12-month fixed term contract. The role will require close interactions with other Scientists and Research Assistants from across the Functional Genomics team to run and help implement SOPs and pipelines for molecular biology, including automated platforms and workflows.

You will be joining a highly diverse team of scientists with expertise in a wide range of scientific disciplines, working collaboratively to develop the technologies that will drive the future of the company.

Your key responsibilities will include:

Operation of molecular biology-related workflows for a wide range of applications across the Functional Genomics team, including Cell Engineering, NGS and Synthetic Biology.
Ensuring all automated systems are well maintained and implementation of error reporting pipelines.
Working collaboratively with scientists across Functional Genomics and the wider R&D team.
Contributing to general operation and maintenance of wet lab spaces, and in particular the Vector Workshop (our in house high throughput cloning platform), Automation and Functional Genomics teams.
Supporting the design, development and implementation of our state-of-the-art vector and vector library platform. This includes LIMS/sample tracking, resource management, SOP and process development.
Commitment to a culture of consistent improvement. Utilise existing automation to aid in developing state-of-the-art automated molecular biology protocols, increasing throughput and reliability of assays and processes.
Training equipment users on key concepts associated with the platforms support best-practice and mitigate avoidable run failures, ensuring optimal routine operation.
Developing quality assurance and process management documentation to assess delivery against requirements.

Will have a degree (Bachelors/Masters) in Biological Sciences/Biochemistry or a related subject, or have equivalent experience.
Are a team player and possess excellent and collaborative skills.
Are enthusiastic, highly motivated and have a passion for science.
Are organised and possess excellent time management skills, allowing for management and prioritisation of your own workload.
Have strong communication skills, with the ability to present research, project outputs and new ideas.
Enjoy problem solving and tackling challenges through critical thinking.

With essential experience in…

Standard molecular and microbiology techniques, including transformations, midi/maxi-preps, restriction enzyme digestions, gel electrophoresis, PCR and basic cloning techniques including ligations, Gibson assembly etc.
Presentation of data to small and large teams.
Managing your own time and workload, as well as working to tight and changing deadlines.

…and possibly…

Running of liquid handling automation platforms e.g. Hamilton, Tecan, Analytik Jena, Beckman Coulter Biomek, Echo.
Some critical assessment of assays and workflows to meet desired requirements and specifications.
Have experience of writing programmes for liquid handling automation.
Experience of using softwares for sequence visualisation e.g. Snapgene.
Be familiar with and used sample management or LIMS system e.g. Benchling, Dotmatics, Clarity LIMS.
Knowledge and experience in gene editing and iPSC culture.
Familiarity with advanced programming languages e.g. C#, Java.
