ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST / SCIENTIST
Salary range: £24,000 to £26,000 for Associate Scientist; £28,500 to £34,000 for Scientist
Contract length: Permanent
Location: Cancer Research UK Therapeutic Discovery Laboratories (TDL) - Jonas Webb Building, Babraham Research Campus, Cambridge, CB22 3AT
Application Deadline: 28th Feb 23:55pm
Cancer Research UK's Therapeutic Discovery Laboratories (CRUK-TDL), is the in-house CRUK drug discovery unit with a principal focus on establishing and prosecuting biologically-themed multi-project alliances with industrial partners. Based at the Babraham Research Campus, Cambridge, and the London Bioscience Innovation Centre, TDL comprises over 90 staff from both industrial and academic backgrounds.
We bring together the best minds in basic and clinical cancer research, the diligence and drive of pharmaceutical and biotech companies, and our in-house drug discovery and Alliance management capabilities to deliver breakthrough medicines for cancer patients.
Why we need you
Our laboratories house the personnel and equipment to progress projects from initial hypothesis through to selection of candidate drugs for regulatory development. We couple this with a deep understanding of academic and industrial drivers, enabling us to build alliances that satisfy the curiosity of basic research and the rigour of drug discovery.
We are currently recruiting for a laboratory-based position, at either Associate Scientist or Scientist level (dependent upon experience), to join CRUK-TDL’s Discovery Bioscience Screening and Compound Profiling (SCP) team. SCP has a broad remit to drive early stage drug discovery. We develop biochemical, biophysical and cell-based assays, run mechanism of action studies, carry out high throughput screening campaigns and run regular structure activity relationship-profiling assays. This role will be primarily focussed on developing and running biochemical assays using recombinant enzymes to characterise small molecules in vitro. However, development opportunities are also likely to arise for a strong candidate to work across other areas of the department.
As an Associate Scientist or a Scientist, you will form an integral part of the CRUK-TDL team working alongside our industry and academic partners to progress novel cancer targets towards patient benefit.
What skills are you looking for?
To join us as an Associate Scientist you will have…
A BSc (or equivalent) in biochemistry, pharmacology or a related life science
An understanding of enzymology and biochemical assay technologies (including fluorescence intensity and polarisation, FRET, and luminescence)
Experience of working in a drug discovery environment, such as an industrial placement year, would be an advantage
To join us as a Scientist you will have…
A PhD level qualification, or equivalent biopharma experience
A solid understanding of enzymology and proficiency in a range of biochemical assay technologies for recombinant enzymes (including fluorescence intensity and polarisation, FRET, and luminescence)
Research experience in a drug discovery environment and compound handling would be highly desirable
Experience of liquid handling and automation would be an advantage
