Scientist Cell Biology

At Vernalis, we develop and apply fragment and structure-based methods to solve problems in drug discovery and generate development candidates against targets in oncology, neurodegeneration, anti-infectives and inflammation.

We have a full-time lab-based opportunity for a Scientist to join our Oncology & Cell Biology team, located at our Cambridge Research site.

Working in collaboration with other scientists, your role will be the development and implementation of cell-based assays for activity and mechanism of action studies. You’ll use a range of established techniques (such as mammalian cell culture, western blotting, immunofluorescent imaging, qPCR and Flow Cytometry) and be involved in the introduction of new techniques and technologies to the lab. Your work will support a variety of projects ranging from target validation to lead optimisation.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and develop cell-based assays and screen compounds to determine cellular target engagement and mechanism of action to support internal and collaborative projects
Analyse and interpret own data
Report and present results to project leaders and project teams
Maintain accurate experimental records and databasing of data
Undertake duties as necessary to enable the efficient running of the labs

About the candidate:

You will have either a BSc or MSc in a relevant biological discipline and at least three years post-qualification practical laboratory experience, preferably within drug discovery.

In addition, you will have:

Competence in a range of cell biology and assay development techniques
Experience of developing and running cell-based target engagement and mechanism of action assays
Good general knowledge of lab and IT software systems including MS Office
Ability to work independently (with and without supervision)
Strong team-working skills and able to collaborate across multi-disciplinary groups.
A methodical and precise aptitude within the lab with excellent attention to detail
Ability to organise work effectively and manage time to work on multiple projects.
Excellent communication skills and a confident presenter
An ability to adapt to deal with tight deadlines and changing priorities
A reliable, professional and conscientious attitude with an eye for detail
A commitment to excellent record keeping, i.e. recording experiments in electronic lab books and various internal databases
Desirable attributes include:

Previous experience working with additional methods such as flow cytometry, protein-protein interaction assays, high content / immunofluorescent imaging, 3D cell culture, qPCR, CRISPR gene knockdown
