At Vernalis, we develop and apply fragment and structure-based methods to solve problems in drug discovery and generate development candidates against targets in oncology, neurodegeneration, anti-infectives and inflammation.

We have a new, full-time lab-based opportunity for a Scientist to join our biophysics group, located at our Cambridge Research site.

Working in collaboration with an integrated team of protein scientists, NMR spectroscopists and Crystallographers, your primary role will be the discovery and optimisation of protein crystals for X-ray data collection and analysis, supporting multiple projects ranging from target validation to lead optimisation.

Key Responsibilities
• Protein crystallisation experiments across multiple projects including:
o Protein sample handling
o Crystallisation screening using robotics (mosquito) and manual techniques.
o Crystal optimisation, including soaking, co-crystallisation, harvesting and crystal cryo-protection.
• Data collection using both in house X-ray and external synchrotron facilities.
• Follow standard experimental protocols (SEPs).
• Interpret and communicate results to project leaders and project teams.
• Maintain accurate experimental records using electronic notebooks.
• Undertake duties as necessary to support wider group and ensure the efficient running of the labs.

About the candidate
This post would suit someone with a practical understanding of protein biochemistry and laboratory-based research experience, preferably gained within a drug discovery environment. Applications will be considered from graduates with a BSc/MSc in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry (Chemical Crystallography), Molecular Biology or other related discipline, as well as candidates with an equivalent level of work experience, for example, operating as a Lab Technician.

In addition, you will have:
• Aptitude for practical laboratory skills including sample handling, pipetting, lab safety, making up stock solutions, buffers etc.
• Good general knowledge of IT software systems including MS Office applications.
• An excellent attention to detail.
• Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
• Can be relied on to complete work to time and specification.
• Team player. Assists others and collaborates across disciplines.
• Ability to organise work effectively and manage time to work on multiple projects and/or changing priorities.

Desirable attributes include:
• Familiarity with biophysical methods such as SPR, ITC and NMR.
• Liquid handling techniques and robotics.
• Desire to continually look for ways to improve processes.
• Presentation skills.
