Your role in our team:

We are looking for a Scientist/Senior Scientist with experience in molecular biology and stem cell/developmental biology to join our Discovery Screening Team within the Department of Functional Genomics. You will be part of a dynamic team that develop, optimize, and perform genetic screening with the aim of generating terminally differentiated target cell types from iPSCs.

Reporting to the Discovery Team Lead, the post holder will work with a team of scientists as a focal point within the wider R&D department. You will support the target cell type Discovery programmes by providing high quality deliverables and expertise as well as develop and implement existing technology or novel scientific advancements in cellular programming, as pertains to the Discovery Screening Team and company-wide goals and objectives.

The post holder will be expected to manage a small team of Research Assistants and as such will be required to lead in the continuous training and development of staff.

The Functional Genomics Department plays a pivotal role in bit.bio’s mission to develop cell types for research and clinical use. The Department consists of 5 teams and 30 core scientists that work closely together and lean on individual internal team expertise to further develop our core platforms and clinical assets. Led by experts in their fields, these include the following teams: Discovery Screening, Next Generation Sequencing, Automation, Product and Technology Development, and Synthetic Biology

Your key responsibilities will include:

To be accountable and responsible for executing the delivery of genetic screens in iPSCs, including validation of putative screen hits.
Be responsible for optimising screening SOPs – iteratively developing our multifaceted platforms, ensuring that bit.bio remains a leader in functional genomics screening.
Engage and influence external collaborators (and suppliers). Be involved in initiating, developing, and driving collaborations which are critical to the achievement of the team and company objectives and goals.
Oversee development and training activities; coach individuals to perform their roles effectively. Help to manage the performance of individuals who are failing to meet agreed standards.
Actively lead in developing and maintaining the core cultural aspects of the company.
Present findings at regular internal and external meetings. Deputise for the Team Lead as required.

You…

Have a higher degree (MSc / PhD) in Biological Sciences (preferably Molecular or Cellular Biology) or equivalent experience
Have a combination of development/stem cell biology expertise and experience in the development of discovery/genetic screens
Are a team player with the ability to prioritise, organise and be responsible for your own workload and that of others
Have a proven track record of project delivery to tight timelines
Have a thirst for knowledge
Are able to independently drive your own research and actively contribute to the projects of colleagues
Enjoy tackling research challenges through critical thinking, scientific rigour and inventiveness

With essential experience in...

Experience in human iPSCs culture and differentiation
Strong experience of core Cell and Molecular Biology techniques
Extensive experience with mammalian cell culture and flow cytometry
Proven ability to communicate research/project outputs, through written or oral communication.
Excellent team working and networking skills, proven ability to influence on Scientific and non-scientific matters.
Ability to manage and prioritise own workload

and possibly...

Experience in high throughput genetic screening approaches using mammalian cell lines
Experience in constructing large libraries for screening (eg. CRISPR, transgene, RNAi etc) - including QC, analysis and experimental requirements
Line management experience and track record of staff development
