About the Role

This exciting new role is based in an established Business Development & Partnerships team that is part of Queen Mary’s Research Services Directorate. The Business Development & Partnerships team drives the growth and expansion of external and industry relationships developed from our outstanding scientific research across the university. Applying for high value research and commercial bids is an integral part of the Business Development & Partnerships team. As Senior Scientific Bid Writer, the role holder will be responsible for the project management of the entire bid lifecycle, supporting the development of win strategies and persuasive delivery structures. Creating bid guidelines and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, the role holder will lead, develop and produce creative and innovative proposal documents that meet funders’/customers’ needs and aspirations.

This role, while primarily working with the Faculty of Science and Engineering, will lead and support multidisciplinary bids across Queen Mary, by bringing complementary expertise from either the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and/or the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This role will manage and lead on applications for high value research and commercial bids and shall facilitate Queen Mary’s ambitious plans to grow its externally funded and collaborative research portfolio, by working closely with partners in both the public and private sector. The role holder will coordinate with internal stakeholders and shall lead bid teams in articulating strategic messaging which delivers the best narrative and competitive value to funders, in compelling and differentiated ways, ultimately developing a winning portfolio of proposals.

Reporting to the Director of Business Development, the role holder will be required to manage multiple tendering/funding opportunities, interact and work cooperatively with the senior partnerships managers in the Business Development & Partnerships team, academics within the Faculty of Science and Engineering and other faculties as needed for the multidisciplinary bids to ensure high-quality bid coordination and writing support for our academic colleagues.

About You
The successful candidate for this busy and diverse role will have experience of working in a complex multi-faceted organisation with the ability to manage competing priorities. You will have evidence of high-quality bid management experience for funding proposals with demonstrable results. A proven track record of leading and winning complex, high-value bids and managing proposals is essential. A strong understanding of the applied science and engineering research with knowledge of the R&D in technology and engineering industry sectors is expected along with the ability to assimilate complex scientific information and ideas quickly. You will have appreciation of the research funding environment in the UK and EU and be able to demonstrate effective communication and relationship management skills whilst working with multiple and varied stakeholders. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are a key requirement, as is the ability to manage and prioritize tasks within a busy portfolio of activities.

The post is based at Department W, Mile End and Whitechapel campuses in London. It is full time (35 hours per week), permanent appointment, with an expected start date on or after 1 Jan 2024. The starting salary will be Grade 7, £61,896 to £69,115 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
