Tissue Culture/Cell Culture Manager

About the role
Abcam are leading supplier of protein research tools to life scientists, with a global reputation for high performance products with detailed technical specifications. As we have continued our rapid growth and success we have identified a need for a new permanent role within our Research and Development function, leading the Tissue Culture team.

Supported by your Team Leaders and working closely with stakeholders from our Innovation and Manufacturing units, you will be responsible for the efficient function and rapid, on-time delivery of the multi-user laboratory, due to relocate to state of the art custom built facilities in early 2019.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience running groups/laboratories responsible for the provision of cell lines and/or producing monoclonal antibodies in culture.
They will have great technical knowledge and a track record of optimisation and delivery, as well as experience building and leading highly engaged, high performing teams.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone to lead the further development of the Tissue Culture group, supplying both monoclonal antibodies and cell lines for QC testing and ultimately to support researchers and scientists across the world to achieve their research missions, faster!

Roles and responsibilities:
Manage a team of 12 Cell Culture Technicians, Scientists and Team Leaders.
Prepare forecasts, budgets and investment cases for the team and facility, communicate to senior management and monitor delivery against them.
Coordinating with Project Managers and Supply Chain you will balance the output of the team to accommodate the demands of product replenishment and product development.
Working with all the users of the laboratory produce capacity plans for the facility, anticipate increases in demand and resource the labs to accommodate.
Ensure team compliance with H&S, Quality, COSHH and GMO policies.
Continuously improve both the Manufacturing and Product Development activities of the team by planning, delegating and executing experimental methodologies aimed at improving productivity and/or throughput.
Gather best practice from around the organisation and the external environment and implement in our new custom-built Tissue Culture laboratories.

About you
You will have solid and proven experience of mammalian cell culture within industry or a large academic group and experience of managing teams in a dynamic environment. During your career you will have demonstrated the ability to meet challenging objectives and be constantly striving for optimal results. Experience of automation of Tissue Culture practices would be an advantage.
