- Bind Research and Twig Bio join LBIC at the Apex in King’s Cross, bringing LBIC’s space to over 50% occupancy just six months after launch.
- Bind Research becomes The Apex’s first non-profit tenant, recently awarded major UK Government and partner funding.
LONDON, UK, 3rd September 2025: London BioScience Innovation Centre (LBIC) has welcomed two new tenants, Bind Research and Twig Bio, to its Apex facility in King’s Cross, reaching more than half its capacity within six months. The milestone validates LBIC’s growth strategy of providing state-of-the-art, fully fitted, grow-on laboratory and office space in its prime location, despite a challenging investment climate for the life sciences sector.
Bind Research, the UK’s first not-for-profit Focused Research Organisation (FRO), supported by the Department for Science, was established with £12.9 million from the UK Government’s Research Ventures Catalyst programme, matched by industry, philanthropic, and charitable partners, bringing total funding to £25.8 million. The organisation develops AI-driven tools and datasets to make disordered proteins accessible targets for life-saving treatments, integrating experimental and computational approaches to advance drug discovery. Bind Research occupies 2,746 sq. ft of lab and office space at the Apex, with interim facilities provided in June 2025 to ensure uninterrupted research while bespoke modifications were completed for specialist equipment.
Gabriella Heller, CEO and Co-Founder, Bind Research, said:
“We’re excited to be joining the vibrant LBIC community at the Apex. This space offers the flexibility and infrastructure we need to build a world-class not-for-profit research organisation. For a mission like ours, namely transforming drug discovery for disordered proteins, it’s crucial to be embedded in an environment that fosters collaboration, innovation, and scientific excellence.”
Gogulan Karunanithy, Director of Magnetic Resonance and Co-Founder, Bind Research, added:
“The Apex facility allows us to rapidly build a state-of-the-art laboratory in the heart of London’s dynamic life sciences sector. Its advanced infrastructure supports our specialised equipment and positions us to attract top talent, forge key partnerships, and drive progress toward treatments for currently untreatable diseases. This move marks a major milestone for our organisation.”
Twig Bio, a next-generation sustainable ingredients biotech, combines AI, robotics, and bioengineering to rewrite the biological code of microbes, cutting development timelines from years to weeks. Using proprietary wet-lab data, the company produces bio-based alternatives to ingredients typically derived from fossil fuels or intensive farming. Twig’s relocation to the Apex marks a pivotal move in scaling its first bio-based ingredient.
Russ Tucker, CEO and Co-Founder, Twig Bio, said:
“Moving to the Apex is a significant step forward. Its excellent facilities and central location enable us to accelerate our research and development. Being co-located with other science R&D companies is invaluable, creating opportunities for collaboration and new partnerships. The Apex is conveniently close to our old site, maintaining access to top AI and science talent, supported by LBIC’s expert team, who know exactly what to prioritise for life science companies.”
Dr Rich Ferrie, LBIC CEO, commented:
“We are delighted to welcome Bind Research and Twig Bio to the Apex. Surpassing 50% occupancy so early on puts us ahead of our growth trajectory and reflects strong demand for our value proposition of fully fitted, high-quality biotech facilities in London’s Knowledge Quarter. These two exciting companies will be key members of our community, benefiting from a culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration. Looking ahead, we will continue attracting companies at the intersection of bioscience and AI research, enhancing our community and creating a place where people feel welcome, and companies accelerate their growth.”
