Collaboration is Key
Whilst the four events detailed below remain fully independent, they offer a valuable co-location in one city of over 1000 collective event attendees active in basic or translational research and the business of collaboration and investment in bio-innovation.
Each event has a clarity of purpose for its audience, but by opening the Genesis conference app to both Genesis attendees and non-attendees, the opportunity is provided for all to connect and meet across the week, even if attending different events. A great opportunity for:
- Scientists to engage and learn from those commercialising the innovation they generate
- Investors and industry dealmakers to learn from scientists about the next advances
- Early-stage investors to meet innovators and entrepreneurs seeking capital
- Life science dealmakers to get early sight of early-stage innovation
- Personal contacts to be made across comfort zones
Innovation is often referred to as a contact sport which thrives on collaboration. It is hard to refute that fact in life sciences, where it takes multiple parties of complementary expertise to convert great science and ideas into patient-benefiting medicines, devices and technologies.
Whilst it is accepted that life sciences is a global industry, if one takes a look at the current drug development and funding landscape in the UK alone, given we are gathering in London, then there is a dominance of early-stage assets in the drug development pipeline as illustrated here from Biotechgate. A pipeline that is far enough from delivering marketed products as yet, but many will look to have developed in order to address the impending Pharma industry patent cliff, where numerous blockbuster drugs have patent expiry looming.
The very challenging early-stage investment landscape, represented by the data from PitchBook below, reflects the need for an early-stage opportunity to be able to demonstrate true game-changing potential to attract capital. Such potential is only demonstrable with excellent underlying scientific data, such data often arising through collaboration between academic and industry researchers to answer the challenges from their investment colleagues.
Connecting Beyond the Noise
Deciding where the interface of great science, translation and early-stage investment congregates is not always obvious. There are a growing number of ‘city weeks’ where many events are delivered in proximity to create a larger buzz. A trend towards bigger being better, attracting more events, but often the trade-off is a growing diversity of participants. This can run counter to human behaviour, which often gravitates to a comfort zone of the familiar, the remainder feeling like noise that drives hotel and travel costs up. Absolutely, for some it will bring added connectivity to a wider audience, but only if the right paths cross among the diversity of interests.
Addressing the noise, diversity and connectivity elements, this upcoming week in London, with the constituent elements all delivered by leading membership and event organisers in their own right, holds exciting opportunities to do something different, creating a unique London Bio-Innovation Week.
