The Value of Collective Support
Welcome to the August 2025 edition of the One Nucleus eNews. The continuing cash-flow challenges in the life science sector in terms of raising investment, M&A deals, grant funding, or client recruitment by the service sector are making life tough at both the company and employee levels for many.
In such times, I find it reassuring to see how the ‘all in this together’ collective spirit comes to the fore and new strategies emerge to combat the downturn.
It definitely felt like a community coming together at the recent ON Helix conference, with innovative thinking around how companies can engage with each other and their stakeholders to progress the translation of great technology into patient benefits. You can now view the recordings of the keynote sessions on the One Nucleus YouTube channel.
Supportive Policy
In such times, it is not surprising that governments are being pressed by industry lobby groups to wrap their arms around the sector and help it sustain its immense global benefit. The message is getting through in world-leading clusters such as Massachusetts and the UK, with Governor Healy’s DRIVE Initiative and the UK Life Science Sector Plan being released. Both these strategies showing ambitions to encourage and enable innovative R&D. These exemplar moves are not sufficient on their own, of course, and additional measures to build confidence with investors and reward entrepreneurs are likely needed to make it an attractive career choice. The case continues to be made to politicians, and it appears some ears at least are listening, so I wish the lobbyists well.
Supportive Neighbours
By its very nature life sciences is a highly collaborative industry in which to work, and the people factor of doing business in the sector is huge. Coming up to the anniversary of my taking over as CEO at One Nucleus, I am always grateful for the support the network has given me at a personal level and at the One Nucleus level.
Reflecting on how One Nucleus can repay that support, I have been delighted to be discussing with colleagues these past few weeks how One Nucleus already presents opportunities at all levels for employees at our member companies and areas in which we could perhaps go further. Some of this is summarised in Monalisa Breazu’s recent blog and the items linked below from Philippa Clark on supporting start-ups and their founders, and Liz Mercer & Matt Evans on leadership, as well as my personal reflections on networking.
Supportive Collaborators
One Nucleus members have to think internationally when they consider growth, investment, or exit due to the nature of meeting unmet medical needs being a global industry. To support this, whilst harbouring no intentions to be international itself, One Nucleus maintains great collaborative relationships with groups like us overseas and with conferencing organisations that bring international partnering and dealmaking together, such as EBD Group, BioCentury, Life Science Nation, and Sweden BIO. It was a pleasure, therefore, to summarise upcoming opportunities in the article below and include Scius Communications’ Gothenburg trailer ahead of NLSDays.

A Journey Through Networking
As One Nucleus provides networking opportunities for employees of our member organisations as a key form of support, Tony Jones ponders his own career journey and how networking has led to his current position as CEO of One Nucleus.
Why Even the Earliest Start-Ups Deserve a Seat at the Networking Table: A Note from One Nucleus
With no lab space, no formal team, and still pre-funding, early-stage life science start-ups are not always ready to join the One Nucleus network. However, it may mean missing out on the very support, visibility, and connections that help start-ups get to that next stage faster. Read more from Philippa Clark, Director of Business Development, One Nucleus, here.
ON Helix 2025: A Snapshot of Disruptive Innovation in Translational Research
This year’s ON Helix conference brought together biotech innovators, service providers, pharma leaders, investors, and academics in an interactive atmosphere to explore cutting-edge developments. Alicia Gailliez, Business Development Manager, One Nucleus provides a snapshot of the conference here.
Why Gothenburg is the Go-To for Global Biotech Innovation
In Gothenburg, sometimes nicknamed Little London, due in part to its glorious pubs, there’s a lot going on in life sciences. There are over 600 companies and 10,000 employees in a place the locals like to call ‘the Nordic capital of getting things done’. Read the article by Scius Communications here.
Supporting Our Members Partnering with the Global Biopharma Industry
There are times when it can feel like a small world when chance meetings and connections are encountered. On the flip side, when a company is seeking the right investor, collaborator or client, then the world can seem awfully big without some guidance of where to look. Tony Jones, CEO, One Nucleus, pinpoints the opportunities ahead.
Proven Management Teams - One of the Keys to Success in the Life Science Industry
What capabilities are investors wanting to see? Liz Mercer, Perla Development Ltd, and Matt Evans, Fired-Up Talent, explore how effective leadership, strategic execution, adaptability in the face of obstacles/market shifts and the ability to make deep connections with others across the life science ecosystem can be developed.
