Learnings From Pop and Rap Stars for Genesis
There is an old saying, popularised more recently by Pitbull and Christina Aguilera, that goes, ‘Ask for money, get advice; ask for advice, get money twice.’ This has perhaps never been truer than in the life sciences sector over recent times when advice has been far more freely given than investment. This is the motivation for the new Company Showcase stream introduced at Genesis this year, which will include fifty pitches from growing companies on their dealmaking journey.

Striving to be Efficient
For several years now the desire to be efficient and targeted has increasingly led to companies trying to focus their presenting towards conferences that claim to be enriched for investors or large corporate acquirers. Whether this is efficiency or a false economy, however, can depend on factors such as:

  • Whether the presenting company portrays the best version of themselves at the time of presenting
  • How those investors source deals. When asked, most investors reply that they source most of their deals through their network and recommendations
  • Whether there are new investors in the room or the same ones that have heard the pitch before and not bought in.

Efficiency, therefore, could be addressed by raising the profile to a broader ecosystem full of experts who can provide first-class advice, are often connected to investors through their day-job activities, and are trusted sources of recommendations. Ecosystems address the dependent factors above, and this is the remit of a community such as One Nucleus, to enable companies to be truly efficient in their deal seeking.
